Salomón Huerta moved to the United States from Mexico when
he was four years old. He became interested in art at a very early age. In high
school, he attended Saturday morning art classes offered at a Los Angeles college.
After Huerta graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles, he began
painting the backs of peoples’ heads and later the fronts of ordinary Southern
Californian houses. Huerta’s paintings have been shown all over the world. Today,
Huerta lives and works in Los Angeles.

Untitled Figure was hung low to the ground so it looks like the person is actually sitting in a chair in front of you. It is part of a group of paintings by Huerta that show the backs of peoples’ heads. Usually portraits are of faces, but here we have to use our imagination to determine the person’s face and personality. This portrait can be any man since we cannot see his face. It is up to you to figure out what this person may be like by taking a closer look at some of the details in this painting. For example, does the shape of his head, color of his shirt, hairstyle, body type, and skin tone tell us what kind of person this may be? Do you think this is a good way of determining what this person is like?
Why do you think that Huerta uses a blank background for his portraits? Why
doesn't he paint the men in other places, like in a park or in their homes?
What do you imagine that this man looks like? What type of person do you think he is (is he friendly, tough, or kind)? What makes you think this?
Imagine taking your class photograph with your back towards the camera. Do you think your friends and family would still recognize you in the photograph?
