Who?
Mary Stevenson Cassatt was born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. School and education were very important to Cassatt’s family. Her parents encouraged her to travel and learn, so she visited many capitals in Europe starting when she was just 10 years old. When she was older, Cassatt moved to Paris to study art. In Paris, she worked with many famous artists, such as Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas. Cassatt is known for her paintings and prints of mothers and children. Her first mother and child portraits were of her sister and her family. It was because of her success that she was able to help and inspire other female artists during that time.

Why?
The little girl in the painting is named Simone. Simone was Mary Cassatt’s neighbor in France. Simone is seen in a lot of Cassatt’s artwork, most likely because she was a convenient model. Simone, who appears to be about 5 years old, sits and looks out from under her bonnet. The sunlight makes her pink dress sparkle and the bright green and yellow brushstrokes appear to bounce around her face. These brushstrokes make it seem like Simone is moving or playing outside. Cassatt enjoyed working with Simone because she was always well behaved while she painted her.

Does this artwork look finished or unfinished? Why? Why do you think the artist left the painting this way?

Where do you think Simone was when this portrait was painted? What do you think she was doing? What clues in the painting make you think that?

Have you ever had your portrait painted or taken with a camera? If yes, where were you and what were you doing?
