Who?
Edouard Manet was born in Paris, France, in 1832. His favorite subjects in school were drawing and the arts. As a child, his uncle often took him to visit the Louvre, a very famous museum in Paris. As an adult, Manet believed that art should be a reflection of the present times, so he preferred to paint everyday subjects like cafès, bullfights, and portraits. His work was very realistic, so much so that it almost looked like a photograph.

Why?
Young Girl in Round Hat, is one of the few Manet drawings that still exists. Since Manet liked to paint scenes from everyday life, he always kept a sketchbook and pencil in his pocket. This way, he could sketch ideas of what he saw around him and then use these sketches later in a painting he would complete in his studio. In fact, for most of his paintings, Manet often had made up to 30 or more sketches of the piece beforehand!

If you could look into Manet’s sketchbooks, what do you think you would find drawings of?

How do you think Manet used his sketches to help him paint?

Where do you think Manet sketched this girl in the round hat?

Do you think she knew Manet was sketching her? Why or why not?
