Edward Weston was born in the United States in 1886 and began
his photography career in 1902. At first, he preferred photographs with a soft-focus
or an almost blurred effect. He eventually turned away from these types of images
to a more modern style. Using only photography techniques such as lighting, the
placement of the camera, and sharp focus, Weston produced photographs that emphasized
the rhythms and forms of natural and man-made objects. Other young photographers,
such as Ansel Adams, also believed in the same ideas and together with Weston
formed Group f/64 in 1932. The name was taken from the smallest camera lens setting.

In Plaster Works, Los Angeles, Weston separates
the building from its surroundings. Weston was interested in studying the
shapes, angles, and the lights and shadows created by the building. To capture
the shapes of the building and the play of light on its different surfaces,
Weston photographed the building from a low vantage
point. Where he placed the camera was deliberate
and created a rhythm or movement in the photograph. For example, if you follow
the edges of the angled roof with your eyes, it will lead you to the different
parts of the photograph.
What types of lines do you see in this photograph? Are they straight, curvy,
thin, thick, etc.? Do the lines show movement and energy, or do they seem
calm?
Where is the photographer, Edward Weston, standing in relation to the subject?
How would the photograph look different if he had chosen a different vantage
point?
Why do you think Weston chose this building as the subject for a photograph?
What do you think he found interesting about this man-made object?
What natural or man-made object would you photograph? How would you make
it different from other photographs of the same subject?

Gelatin silver print - Technical name for black and white photographs. The paper is coated with a light-sensitive silver salt solution in gelatin.
