Andrea Zittel was born in 1965 in Escondido, California. Zittel makes activities that are done everyday, like eating, sleeping, and bathing, into art. In one piece of art, Zittel used everyday items, like a bed, a table, a kitchen area, and a bathroom counter, to create a new place for living in. She likes to use materials over and over so nothing goes to waste. She lives in Joshua Tree, California.

Andrea Zittel created Paper Pulp
Panels because she wanted to find new ways to recycle used paper into something useful. She believes that using paper to build things is more fun and not as difficult to use as other materials, like wood or bricks. Paper is everywhere—in newspapers, magazines, mail-order catalogs and old homework. This means that it would never be hard to build something out of paper. For Paper Pulp Panels, the paper is first turned into pulp, which is wet, cut-up paper with glue. Then the pulp is put into molds to make different shapes. A mold is like a cookie cutter and they come in many different sizes and shapes. The pulp then dries outside in the sun and takes the shape of the mold. The mold used for this artwork looks like wall paneling that was popular in the 1970s.
What does this piece of art look like to you? Would you put it on your wall? Why or why not?
What other materials, besides paper, could you use to make art for a wall?
Zittel is re-using paper to make art, just like artist Perry Vasquez, who uses recycled motor oil from car engines to make art. What other things can you recycle and use to make art?
