Who?
Max Yavno was born in the United States in 1911 and spent the early part of his career taking pictures of life in New York City. He was part of the Photo League, an organization interested in showing the difference and uniqueness of people. After serving in the military during World War II, he moved to the West Coast. He was fascinated with the location and people and began taking photographs about life in California cities.

Why?
Muscle Beach shows Yavno’s enjoyment of activities at this beach in Los Angeles, California. To take the picture, Yavno set up his camera in one spot, on three different Sundays, and took over seventy pictures. This final picture shows a crowded beach with people participating in many different activities, while others watch what is going on around them. In the background, are the signs of food stalls on the boardwalk.

Why do you think the photographer took this photograph from behind the subjects?

What do the signs in the background and the way people are dressed tell you about the location? What do they tell you about when this photograph was taken?

If the photographer took the picture from a different viewpoint, what would be different about this photograph?

Does this photograph look like something you would see at a beach now? What do you think would be the same? What do you think would be different?
