Harry Sternberg was born in New York City in 1904. His parents came to the United States from Eastern Europe. When he was eleven years old, Sternberg began to take classes from the art club at his school and from the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Throughout his life, Sternberg was concerned about what was going on in the world and the issues in the news. He often expressed his feelings in his artwork. He used his art as a way to speak to other people around him and to share his beliefs. He also made a lot of self-portraits.

Mountains and Birches of Utah is very unique because Sternberg did not paint a lot of landscapes. This landscape can be found in Utah near a university where he was an artist. The mountains are very strong and tall against the rich orange sky. His brushstrokes are big and wide, and look like rectangles. Sternberg created this painting to show his amazement at the beauty and power of these mountains.
How did Sternberg show the texture of the mountains and birches in this painting?
Why do you think Sternberg was so amazed by the Utah landscape?
What time of day do you think it was when Sternberg painted this landscape? How can you tell?
Have you ever seen a place in nature that you thought was very powerful and majestic? Where was it? How was it similar to this painting? How was it different? Did you take a picture of it?
