Mark Dion was born in 1961 in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Dion often makes dioramas that
are about nature. A diorama is a three-dimensional scene, sometimes inside a
box, where things are made to look real, but are actually fake. Large dioramas
can be found in museums, like the Natural History Museum. Dion’s dioramas show
peoples’ relationships to nature and some of the problems in nature cause by
humans. For example, Landfill highlights
the problems of pollution and littering.

Landfill is a diorama made inside a wooden shipping
crate. Dion placed glass on one side so that you can look inside the box.
Inside the diorama, there are fake animals, trash, old birdfeeders, and leather
shoes. Dion has placed the animals next to and in the trash to show the ways
in which humans can have a bad effect on nature. Our trash is not good for
the animals or the environment. For this diorama, Dion used trash that relates
to the animal world, such as old bird feeders, leather shoes, and containers
of animal food. Can you identify anything else?
If you created a diorama about nature, what you would put in it?
Do you think that it took the artist a long time to make this diorama? Why?
What other items could the artist put in this diorama to show some of the problems
between nature and humans?

Diorama - Three-dimensional scene,
sometimes inside a box, where things are made to look real, but are actually
fake.
