Born in New York City in 1918, Arnold Newman is very famous for his portrait photography. Newman picks different poses and props to try and show information about the person in his portraits. For example, he puts a pianist in front of a piano or a pilot in front of a plane. This helps the viewer understand more about the person in the photograph.

Georgia O’Keeffe, a painter who is known for bright and colorful desert painting, is one of the many famous people who had their portrait taken by Arnold Newman. In Georgia
O’Keeffe, Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, Arnold Newman gives clues about who Georgia is and what she does. In this picture, O’Keeffe is standing sideways in front of a white canvas in the middle of the desert with a ram’s skull hanging over her head. The three clues are: the blank canvas because it shows that she is painter, the desert in the background shows the subject she likes to paint, and the ram skull refers to the skull paintings that she is famous for.
What kind of clues would there be in a photograph about you?
What do you think about the way things are placed in the photograph? Is it confusing? Is it nicely placed?
O’Keeffe’s location is the desert because it was one of her favorite places. What is your favorite place?
