Robert ParkeHarrison was born in the United States in 1968 and was trained as a photographer. He is very concerned with the environment and how people treat it. In his photographs, he creates a world where the land has been damaged by people overusing it. ParkeHarrison uses painted scenery and props made of wood and found objects to create the scene in his photographs. Many of his photographs are combined and then hand-painted with wax and other materials. Each work is a photograph and a painting. Both Robert and his wife, Shana, work together on the projects, and in recent works both artists’ names are included.

In Edison's Light, ParkeHarrison shows a figure on a unicycle, a bicycle with one wheel, pedaling towards a bolt of lightening in the distance. From the empty and damaged land, the man has created a machine made of wood that includes a light bulb. It appears as if the man is trying to capture the lightening bolt in order to create electricity to make the light bulb work.
How does this photograph show ParkeHarrison’s concern for the environment? What do you think he is trying to say to the viewer?
If you had to create light without any modern equipment, how would you do it?
The ParkeHarrisons combine painting and photography in their works. What would your artwork look like if you could combine a variety of art mediums? (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, etc.)

Mixed media - When two or more artistic media, like paint and collage, are used in the same artwork.
