William Klein’s photographs have been popular in Europe for
many years, but they have only recently become appreciated in America. As a fashion
and fine art photographer, he has been questioned about not using traditional
photographic techniques. For example, he often likes to blur or crop his images,
which creates the feeling that you are part of the action.

Klein was born in the United States but has lived in Europe
since 1948. Kids and Baseball Cards was made when he visited New York in
1954 for a short time. In this photograph, Klein has cut out a few of the
children’s bodies along all four edges of the picture and lowers himself
to take the picture at the same height as the kids. This viewpoint makes
the viewer feel like he or she is surrounded by this group of children.
When was this picture taken? What makes you think that?
Where and how is the photographer standing? How can you tell?
How many kids are there in the picture? How do you think they feel? Sad? Happy?
