Who?
Richard Long was born in 1945 in Bristol, England. Long uses objects from nature to make his art. He has created many pieces of temporary art, which mean that the art does not last forever. Because the art he creates does not last forever, Long takes photographs of his work so other people can see what he has made. Many artists who create temporary art take photographs of their work, as well. When Long creates a piece of artwork in nature, he creates maps so others can find his work.

Why?
From one of his nature walks in San Diego, Long noticed granite stones that used to be part of Baja California. Long collected many of these large stones, made of brown granite, and created a piece of artwork out of them. He decided to arrange them into a circle, with each stone being placed right onto the gallery floor. The circle is 14 feet across. The circle could be a reminder of Long’s memories from his trip to San Diego and his nature walks there.

Why do you think that Long chose to arrange the granite into a circle? Why did he not use another shape? What shape would you choose for this artwork?

Do you think that this piece of artwork would be a different size if Long had made the circle outside of the museum instead of inside the museum? Why or why not?

How do you think the museum stores this piece of artwork when it is not displayed in the gallery?

Do you think a work of art should be made with only art materials? Why or why not? Do you consider this a work of art?
