Who?
Perry Vasquez was born in 1959 in the United States. After he graduated from the Academy of Arts in San Francisco, he moved to San Diego in 1987. In San Diego, he has taught art and graphic design at several universities. Vasquez also opened a gallery in San Diego, called ICE Gallery. This is a place where local San Diego artists can show their work. Most of Vasquez’s art work has Mexican and American imagery, like a baseball player.

Why?
10w-30 (baseball player) is made with motor oil that was actually used in a car. Vasquez is well-known for his technique of using recycled motor oil, which he calls motography. Motography is a kind of printmaking. In motography, the image is painted onto a surface with the recycled motor oil; then a copy of the painting is transferred onto paper by imprinting. Vasquez likes to use recycled motor oil instead of pure motor oil because recycled motor oil has mud and dirt from the car’s engine. This means that the print has higher contrast. Vasquez likes to surprising objects in his work. This print shows a baseball player with a screw in the side of his stomach.

Vasquez, like many artists, uses his artwork to talk about issues that are important to them. What issue do you think Vasquez is trying to tell his audience in this print? If you were to create a piece of artwork, what important issue would you talk about?

Do you think Vasquez believes that it is important to recycle? What makes you think that?
