Collaborative Arts Resources for Education (CARE)
is a unique arts education initiative offered by the Museum
of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Museum
of Photographic Arts, and the San
Diego Museum of Art. In
2004, the three museums received a generous anonymous donation
to create a collaborative arts-based education program for Title
1 San Diego City elementary schools. This three-year project
includes artist-in-residence programs in elementary classrooms,
teacher in-services, and this arts-based Web site. The purpose
of the CARE program is to enable teachers and their students
to continue and expand visual art experiences in the face of
diminished funding for arts education. The goals of this web
site are to provide the educators and students of San Diego,
as well as those throughout the country, with quality arts-based
lesson plans and resources and to inspire a resurgence of arts
education in the K-12 classroom.
The lesson plans on the CARE web site were created with the intention
of being teacher-friendly art activities that are easy to incorporate
into “back-to-basics” curriculum. For this reason, all
of the arts-based lesson plans are linked to at least one additional
curriculum area and support the California State Content Standards.
In each lesson plan, you will find printable images from the three
museums’ collections, samples of student work, descriptive supply
lists and procedures, and bibliographic resources.
While the education departments of the three sponsoring museums will
be continually writing new curriculum for the CARE Web site, we
also would like to include lesson plans and resources recommended
by classroom teachers. If you have materials that you feel would
be valuable to other educators, please see the Contact
Us
page.
